Toilet and Potty Training
Many children and their parents find toilet training difficult and upsetting. It is such a stressful time especially if your child either doesn’t seem to understand and grasp the concept yet OR has developed a real fear of toilet issues.
Other parents can be extremely competitive with regards to how quickly their child managed to toilet train during the day and night times as well. This makes parents, whose children are not grasping the concept quickly, feel inadequate, stressed and out of their depth whilst trying to help their child.
No 2’s unfortunately can often be viewed negatively by children, and many are exceptionally frightened of “this thing that is pushing down in their bottom to escape.”
Some children are fearful of wetting themselves others are frightened of letting go. Occasionally a child has been berated for wetting themselves either at nursery or mocked by one of their peers. If they have either had a urine infection or a bout of constipation these can also lead to a child starting to be scared of going to the toilet.
Many of their fears are not logical but once a child has started to withhold going to the toilet then we will have more problems to deal with. This is particularly true with No 2’s.
Withholding is a whole new ball game which we need to avoid at all costs. Gilly luckily, has many tips, ideas and advice to help parents whose children are unfortunately travelling, this difficult, and often uncomfortable path.
Gilly will come and have a 1hour play session with your child. Children learn through play and it is in her opinion one of the best ways to communicate with children and for them to communicate with you as parents.
She will use a few different techniques to help your child understand about their body and how it works with regards to going to the toilet.
Gilly will also use arts and crafts as well as imaginative play to help understand what is concerning your child and how she can help.
She will also chat with you and give you tips and advice of how to change things for the better going forward with your child’s toilet training.
Each child’s worries and insecurities are unique which is why Gilly visits you in your home, spends time with you and your child and decide what she feels the issues are. Gilly will then send you a written a report for you to follow.

Toilet Training Testimonials
I have to recommend Gillian Assor from Nanny to the Rescue and attempt to explain just how excellent she is! We were struggling with our 3 year old who we thought was ready to train but she couldn’t properly grasp the concept of using the potty / toilet (it had happened a couple of times but those were total flukes!). I had also tried the Oh Crap method which didn’t work for us at all (I know others have had success with it but I just found it incredibly stressful).
What a breath of fresh air to meet Gilly with her far more relaxed and unbelievably effective approach to toilet training. She arrived at our home on a Friday morning laden with crafts and toys for our daughter – she is obviously extremely creative and has a great artistic flair. We had received the Polly Poo book from Gilly in advance so my daughter was already familiar with the character but she was immediately engaged with Gilly. Gilly spent a session teaching my daughter through play and I honestly could not believe afterwards how effective it was. My little one was completely under her spell throughout!
We ditched daytime nappies that very same day and hardly had any accidents in the days following. She now tells me whenever she needs to pee and we go to send Wilbur Wee home. We even had immediate success when on outings and using either her portable potty or restaurant toilets etc. I simply could not believe the change within a matter of hours – it was truly remarkable.
The whole process also became far less stressful and, dare I say it, fun to watch our daughter master this new skill and see how proud she is of herself. She even keeps asking for Gilly to come back again! Thank you so much Gilly, you’ve been amazing!
We recently hired Gillian to have a session with my 3-year-old son in relation to toilet training. My son was good as peeing into the toilet but had a fear with going with poo. I tried many things like star charts, positive narrative, reading funny books about Poo but nothing seemed to work. Gillian visited us with her great toys and equipment specially designed for the task. Our little boy had so much fun playing games, singing songs, and listening to stories prepared by Gillian. Afterwards we followed the advice and he started having progress in his training. I wish I called Gillian earlier as her methods really work and she gives excellent guidance to parents.
Gilly has been an absolute pleasure to meet and work with, and I can’t recommend her highly enough. My daughter who is nearly 3.5 had been struggling with toilet training for a while, not the concept of it, but a fear of release on the toilet. We tried several times to get her to part with her nappies, but each attempt felt like we were taking steps back rather than forward, merely adding further fear.
We called on Gilly, and after spending just an hour with my daughter, and advising us on how to move forward, within no time she was now weeing on the toilet. The after care that Gilly gave was also so important to us, and she gave us such incredible support. Thank you so very much Gilly. You have helped us turn a corner we were worried we would never turn!
We cannot thank Gillian enough. She visited us and our daughter, who had a major fear of going for a poo. Gillian sat with our daughter, read her a story, and played with her. She also gave us some really helpful advice. We have already seen a change in our daughter, and she definitely doesn’t seem as afraid of going. We highly recommend Gillian and thank her for all her help.
I would like to recommend Gillian Assor of Nanny to the Rescue. We had a really tough time potty training our nearly three year old, having had three failed attempts, leaving our daughter completely traumatised by the whole experience. This reached a point where even mentioning knickers or the toilet would cause her to become upset.
I got in touch with Gilly after someone else in a group I am part of recommended her, and I was so relieved that I did. As soon as Gilly left our house, after nearly an hour of playing and chatting to our daughter, she wanted to sit on the potty! The following day she wanted to wear knockers and us ethe potty, and never wear nappies again!
After 3 days I would say that she had completely cracked it, and a week later, we’ve only had one accident (on day 1!). We can’t believe how far we’ve come, and it’s entirely thanks to Gilly

After 3 months of toilet training our 3.5 year old son Adam, he still had a ‘fear’ of pooing in the toilet, so after feeling desperate and stressed, a few of the other mum’s at his nursery recommended that we call Gilly for help. We knew we had nothing to lose and hopefully lots to gain! Gilly came for a 1 hour session, and our son enjoyed every minute. We had read Gilly’s book, Polly Poo Goes Home with him many times, so it then all came to life when Gilly was here with him! She made it lots of fun. We could tell Adam was taking it all in, and so were we! Gilly is great with children.
We knew her methods were no guarantee, but after the session, we put into constant practise almost everything she suggested….and the first positive thing we noticed was that after her visit, our son had changed the way he was thinking and suddenly didn’t want to poo in his pants! A big change and step forward. We continued with the ’tools’ and ideas, which are all great fun for toddlers and parents too…and a week and a half later, our son did a poo in the toilet, and has been ok ever since then! We thought it would take longer! We had a fun WhatsApp video chat with her so Adam could tell her and Gilly could praise him! We are so happy Gilly’s methods worked for Adam. We would definitely recommend having Gilly visit if your toddler has an aversion to pooing in the toilet.
